The Izaak Walton Inn is a unique family-owned retreat that borders the southern boundary of Glacier National Park. The inn is located about mid-way between East and West Glacier, right off of highway 2 near the town of Essex, Montana.
The Izaak Walton Inn is a wonderfully unique lodge built with the same Swiss-style theme that many of the lodges of Glacier National Park feature. Izaak Walton Inn carries a rich history that is closely tied to both Glacier National Park and the Great Northern Railway.
The lodge was originally built in 1939 to serve as accommodations for railroad service personnel and to serve as a resort for tourists arriving at Glacier Park by train.
In the early 1940's plans were in place to add a new entrance into Glacier Park at the midpoint between West and East Glacier, and Izaak Walton Inn was going to be the primary resort lodging option for this mid-point park gate. However before construction began on this new gateway into the park, World War 2 started and by the time the war had ended interest in building this new park entrance had dwindled.
