Probably the best option in a very small town

There are few decent hotels choices in this area. We were stopping here after the most beautiful drive we have ever taken. I will write up the drive in a separate entry. This one is on the hotel. The curb appeal is not very good--it looks rundown and we were not even certain it was open. There is an office east of the two story rooms building. The parking lot is primiative. The rooms are clean and are attractive. The bed comfortable, but the air conditioning unit is noisy. In addition, the noise from the second floor guests is disturbing and makes sleeping difficult. Not a great option, but we had to find a place to sleep!

Pleasant Stay

This is a clean, updated hotel with a comfy bed. We were on the river side, 2nd floor, so it was quiet with a nice view. The TV was good, but went out on the 2nd night, though not likely a usual thing. The wifi was a bit slow the 1st night, but seemed better the 2nd night. The pool & hot tub is nice and had just opened on April 3rd with some nice weather. The owner(?) is really nice and informative. It's really close to Goosenecks State Park, Valley of the Gods and Mexican Hat Rock and fairly close to Monument Valley. Natural Bridges National Monument is a bit further, with a couple miles of gravel road, but close enough. The AC is continuous and bit loud, like a typical wall unit, but not too bad. Overall a nice stay.

We HAD to stay somewhere in the area because of where we came from and where we were going. My wife just picked this place because it looked like the best in the area. The staff was friendly, room was very clean, nicely furnished and quiet. The only drawback was that the bed was just to hard for my liking, if you can handle a firm bed you should consider staying here, but I probably won't....

Appalling attitude

We stayed at The Hat Rock Inn with our friends so I had reserved 2 rooms one of which was a wheelchair accessible room. 4 weeks prior to our stay I emailed to check one was an accessible room. I received an email from Lesha confirming this. On check in she gave us the room keys and looked surprised when I asked which was the accessible one! She advised that neither were and the 2 that had wider doors were both occupied. I told her she had confirmed my request by return email to which she replied I had only asked if we’d booked 2 rooms. I showed her the email and her reply. She contacted her manager, Joy, to explain and she said we could have a refund and go and find another hotel. As there are very few hotels in this area and it was already late afternoon finding one with vacancies let alone one with an accessible room wasn’t an option so we had to check into a room which was not suitable for a wheelchair user and very difficult for my husband. I asked for a substantial discount so Lesha contacted her manager again and brought the phone along to the room. Whilst my husband was listening to a barrage of reasons why we couldn’t have a large discount, how I don’t know how to reserve a suitable room etc and it was our fault I said to Lesha that it wasn’t acceptable and she should have read the email correctly to which she replied she had an 8 month baby and was surviving on 4 hours sleep! Not really my problem. We spent the night there and checked out the next day, no reception staff around but the cleaner advised they turn up between 10 and 11am! On receipt of our invoice with a small discount Joy informed me that she had done some investigation into my booking and in doing so had logged onto the cctv to confirm what my husband’s “reduced mobility” was and again telling me I don’t know how to book a suitable wheelchair room. To cut a long story short I replied stating that to my knowledge no manager has ever checked to see if my husband did have reduced mobility, that I found it incredibly rude to tell me I don’t know how to book a suitable room for my husband when I have been doing this for 20 years whilst we have travelled around the States and that the staff competency was somewhat lacking. She also accused me of trying to get a bigger discount by telling her I wouldn’t be writing a very good review. My reply was that whatever discount she gave me it wouldn’t affect my review! She then replied accusing me of trying to blackmail her which as it was 10 days after our visit and the fact I hadn’t stopped the money being paid for the room seemed strange! Despite the tired exterior and shabby reception area and no breakfast as the restaurant was empty of anything, the rooms, despite not being what I asked for, where clean and well equipped. But the attitude and extreme rudeness of the manager and the staff having a total lack of any clue of what to do there is no way I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and if I were you, as Joy said - go and find another hotel in the area!

Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover

Hat Rock Inn is a prime example of you can't judge a book by its cover. Pulling into the property you think you've made a mistake booking here. The curb appeal is not there. However, after getting into the room and exploring the place, my mind changed completely. The king room was quite large and the furniture and fixtures were in excellent condition. The pool area was very nice with good views looking out over the San Juan River. You could take a nice walk down to the cliffs overlooking the river to get a better view. Overall, I would book this property again if I was ever in the area.
