Yellowstone Snowmobiling

yellowstone snowmobilingThere are many guided tours to take around the park by way of skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or driving. Snowcoach vehicles keep passengers warm while taking them past hot springs, blanketed forests, and diverse wildlife. A knowledgeable guide educates guests about the region. Snowcoach tours leave daily from the Old Faithful Snow Lodge and other park locations.

Snowmobile tours are an extremely popular way to take visitors through the park. Some are offered as part of a lodging package through Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Packages include lodging, breakfast, snowmobile tours and transportation.

Hundreds of miles of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails exist throughout the park. In fact, West Yellowstone is the official training area for the U.S. Olympic Cross-Country Ski Teams! A great way to explore some of the best scenery is to take specialty guided tours. These tours are also available at the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Old Faithful Snow Lodge.

There is a Grand Canyon Ski Tour that takes guests, by snowcoach, to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone where a guide leads skiers to the frozen Lower Falls and through the bright walls of the canyon. The Cooke City See & Ski leaves from the Mammoth Hot Springs and leads out to the Absaroka Mountains with a spectacular view of snow-covered peaks.

cross country skiingTours designed for snowshoers are also offered at the park. These tours take guests past the impressive geologic features that make Yellowstone such a sought after location. Some wildlife tours and tours specifically for families are also available seasonally. They are all wonderful ways to learn while on an adventure through Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone Winter Landscape

Snowmobiling in Yellowstoneprovides the best opportunity to see all of the park's unique topography which includes about half of all the geothermal features on Earth. In the winter, visitors can still take advantage of soothing, natural hot springs throughout the park. Yellow, blue, orange, and green can be seen refracting from heated water above shallow magma chambers beneath the ground. The largest hot spring in the park is the Grand Prismatic Spring. Other hot springs here include Morning Glory, Emerald, Abyss, and Sapphire Springs. The Mammoth Hot Springs continually change in size and color. It's a very popular winter destination with a lodge nearby, and is easy to reach by car.

Geysers are another distinguishing natural wonder here. Yellowstone has more than 300 geysers - the most anywhere in the world! Some erupt each minute, while others may sit dormant for months. yellowstone winter attractionsSteam and hot water shoot up through narrow rock passageways, making a spectacular display year-round. Steamboat Geyser is the largest in the world, and erupts reaching heights of 300 to 400 feet. Riverside is another unique geyser which sprays at an angle over the Firehole River, often forming a rainbow. Old Faithful is the most famous geyser in the park, and there are lodges nearby with excellent views of this geyser basin.

Fumaroles are volcanic holes where steam and other gases are released with such force, it often makes a booming sound. Mud Pots are another unique feature where sulfuric acid breaks rock down into a clay that bubbles up through the earth. These geologic features vary at the park from season to season, depending on the weather. All of these hydrothermal sites provide a dramatic contrast to the wintry, surrounding environment.

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the Absoroka and Gallatin mountain ranges are gorgeous in the winter while covered with snow. Yellowstone Lake and Pine forests also provide tremendous scenery in the wintertime. Deep, powdery trails open up a variety of possibilities on how to explore this rambling wilderness. There is so much incredible winter scenery to see and so much epic adventure to be had throughout the park in the winter time, you should not let the lower temperatures of winter keep you from the magnificent landscape of Yellowstone National Park.
